| "Deep
in the Badlands we find the bones of...
the
giant water monster, which lived long before human beings appeared." Their
bones are "mixed with the remains of petrified seashells and turtles."
When they were alive, the water monster was covered with red hair and had
"one horn in the middle of its forehead. It had a backbone like a saw."
When the earth was young, water monsters fought with the giant thunderbirds,
whose "bodies turned to stones, like those of the sea monster...
and
their remains, too, are scattered throughout the Badlands."
